Insurance and Superbills
Your care comes first. To give every client the highest level of privacy, support, and flexibility, Darrell is a private pay therapist and is not in network with insurance providers. Many clients still use their insurance benefits by submitting a superbill for possible reimbursement.
Our goal is to make this process simple so you can focus on healing, not paperwork.
Why We Choose Not to Use Insurance
Many clients are surprised to learn that using insurance for therapy often means less privacy and more restrictions. Insurance companies require a mental health diagnosis and can limit the type of therapy you receive, how long you can attend, or how often you can meet.
By staying private pay, your care remains entirely between you and your therapist. Your sessions stay focused on your goals, your pace, and what feels most helpful to you. No diagnosis is added to your permanent medical record unless you choose to submit a superbill to your insurance.
Clients who prefer a more personal and private counseling experience often find that this approach supports them far better than the limitations of in-network care.
What Is a Superbill
A superbill is a detailed receipt that includes everything your insurance company needs to review an out of network claim. It contains the dates of your sessions, the type of service provided, the diagnosis code, and Darrell’s practice information.
A superbill does not guarantee reimbursement, but many plans cover a percentage of out of network psychotherapy once you meet your deductible. Some clients are reimbursed for a meaningful portion of their care.
How to Check Your Out of Network Benefits
You can call the number on the back of your insurance card and ask:
Do I have out of network mental health benefits
What percentage of the session fee is reimbursed
What is my out of network deductible
How do I submit a claim once I receive my superbill
This helps you understand exactly what your plan offers before you begin therapy.
How the Reimbursement Process Works
1. You attend your sessions
Payment is made at the time of service.
2. You receive your superbill
A superbill is sent to you each month with the information your insurance company needs.
3. You submit your claim
Most insurance companies allow you to upload your superbill through your online member portal. If you are unsure where to submit it, the customer care number on your card can guide you.
4. You receive reimbursement
Many clients receive an Explanation of Benefits and a reimbursement check within 30 to 45 business days if their plan covers out of network therapy.
Using an HSA or FSA
If you have a Health Savings Account or a Flexible Spending Account, you can often use those funds to pay for therapy sessions. This can significantly reduce your out of pocket costs.
A Few Things to Keep in Mind
Reimbursement depends on your plan’s specific benefits
Some plans begin reimbursing only after the deductible is met
Some plans reimburse a percentage of the session fee
A superbill is required for any insurance reimbursement
